Hi Kent,

I had a friend that is trying to use the Netflix odata with JSONP APIs. Recently the examples stopped working as it seems the callback params is not being used :

http://odata.netflix.com/Catalog/Titles?$top=10&$callback=myCallback&$format=json

Does the API still support callbacks? I'm seeing a weird responses...

Thank you in advance

Hi Kent, I hope you can help me. I'm using the identicabadge on edubuntu.org, but it only shows update from friends, not the edubuntu identi.ca user itself. Is this a bug in identicabadge or is it something I could fix myself? Thanks! -Jonathan

I am a recruiter working with a start-up taking media centers and cloud storage to a new level. I came across your profile on LinkedIn and am very interested in talking to you about this opportunity. Existing media centers and cloud storage solutions do not fully address the modern media consumers’ needs for storage, organization, searching, sharing and viewing media. Our client provides access anytime and anywhere to your personal media library as well as media from friends, family, and 3rd party sources; in essence, they create a complete social experience for hard core media users.

They are now looking for a Front-End Engineer to join the founding team and lead the front-end development piece of the product. For the right person, this position could turn into a Lead Developer role.

Your technical skills must include:
• Minimum of 5+ years of solid software development experience
• Excellent object oriented programming skills
• Strong experience coding D/XHTML, JavaScript, CSS and Ajax
• Strong experience programming graphical interfaces with a keen sense of understanding for the latest UI design
• Strong Experience with JavaScript libraries such as jQuery and Mootools
• Experience with JSON API integration
• B.S. in Computer Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Big pluses include:
• Experience with Flash video applications and players
• Experience with rich media, entertainment applications
• Mobile application development

You must be someone who:
• Thrives in the fast-paced and high-energy environment of an early-stage company
• Is reliable, motivated and driven to create a successful product
• Has the ability to see the bigger picture and successfully execute
• Is willing to go beyond your official job description

If this sounds like you please send me your resume to vivi@peopleconnectstaffing.com for immediate consideration.

If you are not interested in this position, please do forward this on to anyone you know who might be.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks for your great tools.

I was wondering, have you read about CC-BY-SA license being not suitable for code?[1] It is NOT identical to GPL job and it doesn't have a large software community around it. Meaning that your code will not be usable for most of the free software community.

Please consider change your code to "GPLv3 or any later version" license and let your users enjoy the same rights and more!

In identica-badge.js the following line assumes that all users are following someone else, but that's not always the case:

var url = 'http://' + $.a.server + '/api/statuses/friends/' + $.a.user + '.json?callback=' + id;

Therefore the badge doesn't work for such users. Is there a way for the JS to check on the existence of friends and respond appropriately? I suppose I can ping Evan about that. :)

Kent,

Given the impending demise of mybloglog, and an interest in owning my own foaf data & doing something fun with it, I'm interested in this bit in your foafster article:

"...nobody else in the world is presenting FOAF as a JSON object wrapped in the callback of your choice, if you ask nicely, using format=json&callback=foo. Although it's possible to run anybody's FOAF object through Pipes and get JSON back, MyBlogLog cuts out the middleman by being brave enough to serve it all up live..."

The only existing pipe I've looked at that provides an option to squeeze an arbitrary foaf url into json is Mark Woodman's at http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=vNFSWgPk2xGBAoRllfXiAA, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to replace your line of code in foafster.js that reads:

var url = 'http://www.mybloglog.com/buzz/members/' + id + '/foaf?format=json&callback=' + callback;

Or am I on the wrong track? Any hints?

Thanks!

Hi Kent...just wanted to apologize for the hotlinking I did of your identica badge at my site (kenzoid.com). It wasn't explicitly intentional...I went from testing out and loving the script to pushing a hunk of js into a Wordpress text widget w/o thinking. Completely my fault. I've since grabbed copy to put in my static files server, so that I can continue to use. Great work, and your js magic is _completely_ amazing. You're really giving me some good ideas! Again, please accept my apologies. Thanks.

Sorry, had some busy times. Had lunch with Zubin, just pinged Scott via LinkedIn.

Yuping: YouTube? Seriously? Worst, weakest social network EVER. If you must, check out YouTube Outgrows Shy Adolescence, Goes Social, on the YouTube API Blog.

Louigi: I'm sure you could use a much simpler solution to just show your own Laconica/Identica posts; as has been noted already, my Identica badge is really heavy and in need of refactoring. Here's the endpoint (which I had a heck of a time sussing out):

http://[server]/api/statuses/user_timeline/[user].json

My Identica updates, for example, are here:

http://identi.ca/api/statuses/user_timeline/kentbrew.json

You might want to try pulling down a copy of the badge JS and substituting that endpoint for the /api/statuses/friends one that's currently being called. You could also use a Yahoo! Pipes badge and point it to your own RSS feed.

Hello Kent, I am currently working on a research project related to user-generated content. To collect data needed for the project, I would like to find out if there is a API-like solution that can make data collection from YouTube more automatic and easier. The part that is the most difficult manually and therefore I would like to find a solution for is to extract the network structure among YouTube users: i.e., who is friend with whom for our randomly selected sample of videos. If this is a project that you are willing to do, could you please get in touch with me? Thank you!

Sorry, folks; occasional randomness slips through.

After the post below from "B. Obama" appeared, I looked through my server logs. If you aren't familiar with how this works, the first number is the client's IP (Internet Protocol) address, which changes from time to time but never within the same browsing session. Next come the date and time at the server, followed by the page the client asked for and the page the client came from.

Here our visitor arrives from a Google search for "BOYD tobias san jose." As of this writing, the number-one result on Google for this search string is In Which Tom Boyd Punches my Wife in the Face, which is the sad story of events at a family Thanksgiving in 2007:

69.228.195.44 [13/Aug/2009:17:42:43 -0700] "GET /tom-boyd-punched-my-wife-in-the-face/" "http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-us&q=BOYD+tobias+san+jose&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8"

Here our visitor goes from In Which Tom Boyd Punches my Wife in the Face to my home page:

69.228.195.44 [13/Aug/2009:17:43:05 -0700] "GET /" "http://kentbrewster.com/tom-boyd-punched-my-wife-in-the-face/"

Here our visitor goes to Contact Me, the page you're reading right now:

69.228.195.44 [13/Aug/2009:17:44:00 -0700] "GET /contact/" "http://kentbrewster.com/"

Here our visitor posts the message immediately following this one:

69.228.195.44 [13/Aug/2009:17:46:56 -0700] "POST /make-post/" "http://kentbrewster.com/contact/"

After checking Google myself I think it highly unlikely that anyone searching for this particular phrase, "BOYD tobias san jose," could be looking for anything other than In Which Tom Boyd Punches my Wife in the Face.

"Tobias" and "san jose" are the street and city of Mr. Boyd's address, as noted on In Which Tom Boyd Punches my Wife in the Face, so whoever was doing the searching seems to have already known the answer, and was only checking to see if the page was still there.

Yes, In Which Tom Boyd Punches my Wife in the Face is still there, because there's been nothing even remotely resembling an apology from Mr. Boyd. There have been legal proceedings, a plea bargain, and sentencing, but no apology. Perhaps it's time for an update.

As you stated on the Delicious Search Exploder-Page you used in your Mashup
YQL, Pipes, and a couple of native feeds.

It would be nice if you were so kind and answere me a few questions.

1. wich native feeds do you used for your search.
2. why do you used Pipes when you can already make a YQL search like
this

I just bought an iTouch and stupidly bought the upgrade to version 2.0 from iTunes before realizing I could hack my device. Yours is the first page I've found that I kinda understand but I could really use some help in restoring the itouch and obtaining a way to allow third party applications. I am really new to the land of computers and, to be honest, and am afraid of screwing up either my computer or iTouch. I currently rin Windows Vista and I have iTunes version 7.7.0.43. Think I could trouble you for some help?

Thank you for your time and patience,
Sarah

I hate recruiters. Double fail for the encoding discrepancies.

Anyway, instead of the typical "your skills are greatly required for a super stealth-mode startup with amazing leadership blah blah blah", I'll keep it short and sweet.

I'm a front-end developer with Causes in Berkeley. We write software and web applications that help people accomplish and spread social good -- in other words, if you care about saving the dolphins, we provide you with the technology and ability to organize your friends around your cause and make donations to a relevant non-profit.

We're looking to hire great engineers and technical leaders, etc. If you're interested, drop me a line and we can talk.

Thanks.

Sathya: Fixed, sorry.

Hi, Arjun. It sounds like you want the badge to tell the CMS to send the e-mail when somebody interacts with it. I'm not sure why you want to do this with a badge; if it's an independent piece of JavaScript it will need to know which user to send mail to, and I can't think of a way to do that that doesn't involve an open cookie, a login/password form inside the badge, or other gaping security hole. Please be careful out there.

Hi Kent,

I wanted to tie a web badge in with an existing CMS that I have on my site. What I am trying to do is have the CMS automatically generate a code and e-mail it to a user, who would be specified in the CMS. Would you be willing to guide me with this implementation, or discuss setting something up for your assistance?

Hi Kent, Stephen from Trade A Favor here. We met at the Maker Faire last weekend.

Many people said that they had been thinking of a concept similar to Trade A Favor, and that's precisely my reaction to your open profiles post. It's a "man, I have *just* been thinking about that" reaction.

I hope you get an opportunity to add our prototype to your Facebook application and give us some feedback. You had also expressed interest in schooling us on the wonders of APIs, even for startups like us working within the Facebook API. Talk to you soon.

Stacy: oh, dear. I need to rig something to allow me to go back to previous days ... sorry about that, please let me know if it happens again.

Arodicus: one of my goals for the project was NOT to require immediate execution of the closure upon load. There could potentially be hundreds of badges--including multiple instances of the same script--on the page at once, or a very large page beneath a badge at the top of source order, and the delay in perceived load time wasn't acceptable.

It's a valid side branch to explore, however, and I will continue to do so in future. Requiring the script to know its own name is a major pain point.
Stacey .:. 2008-05-01 21:34:27
Todays puzzle is impossible to solve (May 1st) the middle far left 6 squared box can't possibly have a green colored square in it, just thought I would let you know (I have never solved it in less then 30 moves and I plan to keep it that way haha)
Arodicus .:. 2008-05-01 16:09:46
I'm not sure I follow you... unless the script is doing something like dynamically adding it's own scripts (in which case, yes, it would fail), and so long as the script is written to force immediate execution of the closure upon being loaded, it should work, I would think, regardless of where it's loaded, wouldn't it? Can you provide a rough example where it would NOT work?
Kent Brewster .:. 2008-05-01 08:22:06
Ah, see, but that will only work if the SCRIPT tag appears last in source order, which is guaranteed not to be true if the site operator is following best practices and including his libraries immediately before the close of the BODY tag. Good thought, though; please keep trying!
Arodicus .:. 2008-04-30 17:28:41
I loved the succinct treatise on Badges, and wanted to offer a suggestion. Replacing the line:

var thisScript = /badges.js/ (near the bottom)

with this function:

var thisScript = (function(){
var scr=document.getElementsByTagName('script');
return scr[scr.length-1].getAttribute("src");
})();

...eliminates the need for entering the scripts path if you give it a different name.

Hello Kent Brewster,

I am amazed by the mashup work you do.
These days I am looking for information about LinkedIn API.
When I have searched for it in API category on http://www.programmableweb.com/
You are the only guy who has worked on it.

There is an article which says 'LinkedIn to avoid 'API free for all http://www.e-consultancy.com/news-blog/364404/linkedin-to-avoid-api-free-for-all.html

I am desperately looking for some information about
1) How to get access of the linkedin API / REST spec.
or
2) Whom to contact in Linked in to get access for linkedin API / REST spec.
An email to developers@linkedin.com has not been of any use so far.

I will be grateful to you if you could please provide me the necessasary infomation to start on this.

Thanks in anticipation,

Regards,
Vijayender

Kent: My words are completely sincere; yesterday I received my 6th short story acceptance. The first 5 were last year. And all of them owe their moment to my time on the Rumor Mill. I think a LOT of writers got their start through the people they met there, or through information posted. It'll be remembered a long time.

Question: Would you have a back up of the Mill? I would hope to beg a copy of my author topic, if possible. I'm slowly transferring the odd relevences over to my LJ now. But the Google cached has expired, I think...

Hi, Kent:

I really enjoyed your session on social data at the SD Forum event at Yahoo! last week. It was one of the better SDForum sessions in a little while - there was a lot of interesting information packed into a short time. Your bookmarklet was really cool, although it's freaky how much public information about a person can be extracted by working backwards through the API and on to other social sites.

I've posted an article about it on my blog:
Social Data: Observations from "Search & The Social Graph" Event

Cheers!

Hello there, thanks for the great advice. Sadly I have somehow flubbed it. I did a jailbreak successfully on the first try, then when I was in the VT to reallocate the space I must have fat fingered it because on the re-load I got the dreaded blank screen. So, I dutifully re-installed 1.1.1 and started over. Everything went fine until I had 1.1.2 re-installed and ran the 1.1.2 jailbreak (with ssh install) option. It seemed to run successfully, but on the first re-boot my touch now spews forth a large length of command prompt information culminating in

Singleuser boot --fsck not done
root device is mounted read-only
if you want to make modifications to files

/sbin/fsck -fy

if you wish to boot the system

Kent Brewster .:. 2007-11-13 08:49:19
Cool, glad it's useful. Yes, I need to revisit Twitterati and get auto-links working; it would also be nice to be able to go back if you get stuck on Scoble's page, or at least be able to enter a user id somewhere without having to discover it by surfing. Please don't forget to look at Case-Hardened JavaScript for a peek under the hood.

CrowdVine looks very interesting; how's that going for you?
Tony Stubblebine .:. 2007-11-12 23:04:13
Kent, I was going to ask what the license was for Twitterati because I wanted to work it into a widget for CrowdVine (and probably extend it to auto-link @syntax/urls and for OpenSocial which would let me add a link to the local profile). Then I found your FAQ and my question was answered. So all I have to say now is thank you and good work.
